steel_debate_oct14.jpg

Yesterday my Labour colleague, Tom Blenkinsop MP, called a debate about the steel industry in the UK.  I raised the challenges which local employers like TATA Steel in Newport East are facing, and the need for these to be addressed by the UK Government.

You can see the full debate in the Hansard record here.

It was a pleasure to be at the Caerleon premier last Friday of an excellent new local film about Newport’s famous suffragette, Lady Rhondda.  The film, produced by Winding Snake Production Company, was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and local schools including Ysgol Gymraeg Casnewydd were involved in the project.

Margaret Haig Thomas was not only a suffragette, she was also the first woman director of the Institute of Directors, publisher of Time and Tide Magazine, and on the board of numerous companies.  Hers is a story that deserves to be told and retold, and it was wonderful to enjoy the film with the young people who were part of making this project such a success.

For more information, take a look at the project website here http://www.abirdinacage.org/

You can watch an introduction to Lady Rhondda below:

palestine_vote.jpg

Many constituents have been in touch over the last few weeks to say how strongly they support the motion put to the House of Commons last night.  I did vote to support the recognition of a Palestinian State and the result of the vote was 274 to 12 in favour of the amended motion:

'That this House believes that the Government should recognise the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel, as a contribution to securing a negotiated two state solution'.

I do hope this is a small step to securing a negotiated two-state solution.

Today (10th October) is International Day of the Girl. This is a day led by UN Women which tries to raise the profile of gender inequalities. This year the focus is on violence against adolescent girls, which we know is a major issue across the world, as well as in our own country.
