If re-elected as MP for Newport East here are my pledges for the people in and around the city in Newport East.  If re-elected I will continue to work hard to be a local, accessible and active MP.

1. Labour has pledged to scrap the Severn Bridge Tolls – I have a track record of campaigning on the impact of the tolls on local commuters and businesses, and I will continue to do so.

2. I will continue to raise the impact of Tory police cuts locally.  I have consistently spoken up for constituents and Police officers in Parliament here and here.  Welsh Labour has pledged 853 new police officers for Wales and has stepped in to fund an extra 500 Community and Support Officers across Wales.

3. I will continue to work with steel workers, their unions and the industry to support the long-term future of our local steel industry.  Unlike the Tories, the Welsh Labour Government stepped in in difficult times to support the steel industry and Labour has pledged to work to end the dumping of state-subsidised goods on our markets, and is committed to a procurement process that supports the British steel industry.  As an active member of the all party steel group, I have regularly spoken on this in Parliament.

4. I have a track record of championing local jobs, will fight to save jobs in Newport East, and will oppose the Tory Government’s plans to relocate DWP jobs away from Newport.

5. I am committed to working for a sensible Brexit for Newport East, one that protects jobs, workers’ rights and environmental standards.

6. I will continue to speak up for constituents hit by the Tory Government’s policies, including the WASPI women hit by Tory pension changes, changes to disabled people’s benefits, and have voted against the Bedroom Tax and tax credit cuts.

7. I will continue to support the South Wales Metro and the huge benefits an integrated transport system will bring to our city.  I will continue to work with our excellent local rail groups and commuters to raise their concerns about services.

8. I will continue to support Newport City Council and the Welsh Labour Government on the development and regeneration of our city, including on major projects like Friars Walk which has sparked a new start for the city centre.

9. Since 2015 I’ve dealt with 4,782 cases and enquiries from constituents and have kept people up to date with my work via Facebook, Twitter, regular email bulletins and through local media including the South Wales Argus.  I will continue to work hard to help represent the people of Newport East.

10. I have pledged my support for looking at the potential for the development of tidal lagoons in Newport.

11. I will continue to hold and advertise regular surgeries across the constituency  which are accessible to all, and support our wonderful local community groups and activities.
