In Britain today too many people are treading water, working harder and harder just to stay afloat, and worried that the next generation are finding it harder to get on than the last.

In England, Scotland, Wales and every part of the UK people are asking can anyone build a better future for the working people of Britain? That question is the general election question.

• 45% of people in Scotland voted to leave our country and
• Many others across the UK have given up on politics

The Tories failing plan can’t answer that question. They tell people “you’re on your own”, with a recovery that is benefiting a privileged few far more than most families…

• Cutting tax for people on over £150,000 a year while raising it for everyone else.

… and our NHS is going backwards with people struggling to see their GP and waiting lists rising. The NHS is not safe in their hands.

• One in four patients waiting a week or more for a GP appointment.
• Waiting lists for treatment are at their highest level for six years.
• Our elderly people are stuck with 15 minute visits, not the care they need.
• More than half of nurses say their ward is dangerously understaffed.

Ed Miliband today said that together we can answer that question, together we can restore people’s faith in the future. We kept our country together, now we need to change our country together. 

He set out a new plan for Britain; a plan with six goals to make Britain work for everyday working families by rewarding the hard work they do and saving the NHS they rely on.

• Ensuring that as many young people go into apprenticeships as university

This is a new plan for Britain’s future, not just to clear the deficit…

• We will scrap winter-fuel payments for the wealthiest pensioners.
• Child Benefit rises will be capped at 1% for the first 2 years of next parliament.

… but to reward hard work, strengthen the recovery, make sure it works for everyday working families.

• Make work pay with an £8/hour minimum wage by the end of the next Parliament.

• Freeze gas and electricity bills until 2017 and reform the energy market.

• Ban exploitative zero hour contracts.

And more than anything else this is a plan to save the NHS, the greatest symbol of what we achieve together as a country. It is time to care for our NHS, and time to make sure those that work in it have time to care

We will raise £2.5bn for an NHS Time to Care Fund, not from everyday working people but by ensuring that hedge funds and other tax avoiders play by the rules, and asking those at the top to pay more.

• Raising tax on high-value properties worth more than £2 million.
• Clamping down on tax avoidance schemes used by hedge funds.

Introducing fees on tobacco companies, based on those in the US.

This money will be used to save and transform our NHS, with enough doctors and nurse with the time care for patients and transforming services so the NHS can meet future health challenges.

20,000 more nurses, getting the basics right with safe staffing.

8,000 more GPs, to help people stay healthy outside hospital.

5,000 new homecare workers and 3,000 more midwives.

We built the NHS, we will save the NHS and transform it for the future.

• Ensuring better access, guaranteeing GP appointments in 48 hours.
• Cut the waste the Tories have introduced through privatisation and competition.

But elections aren’t just about policy. It also matters how we lead. The choice at this election is between leadership that will always stand for the privileged few or leadership that fights for you.

Ed Miliband will be a Prime Minister reaching out across our country, who will stand up for you when you need it

• Standing up to the energy companies
• Calling out the Daily Mail, when they lied about his dad.

After five years of David Cameron we know he stands up for a privileged few. He says he cares about the UK but the last week has shown that all he cares about is UKIP. The truth is photo opportunities won’t trick people into thinking he stands up for them:

• Hugging a Huskie, then saying “cut the green crap”.
• Campaigning against hospital closure, then closing the same hospitals
• Claiming to be a compassionate Conservative, then giving us the bedroom tax

So when people ask can anyone build a better future, the answer is yes. Together we can.
