Assembly Grant for Newport East Community Group 23 January 2008
Extra Funding for Community Project Announced
Jessica Morden MP welcomed the announcement that Newport East community group RASCAL (Regeneration Association Somerton Community at Large) are to receive extra funds from the Assembly Government for work to improve the local environment.
An Award of £50,000 will support a purpose built community facility in Somerton, it is hoped the venue will help deliver a regeneration programme on the Somerton estate. The aim of the project is to tackle anti-social behaviour through a comprehensive social/education/learning programme for young people and the wider community. The grant will be used to purchase a reconditioned demountable building.
Jessica Morden MP said "This is great news for the community, the team at RASCAL work so hard and do an excellent job in Somerton but really need proper facilities for the community. I am very much looking forward to the new building being opened and seeing what they are able to achieve with the additional resources."
This grant is one of a number of projects to be given additional funding announced by Welsh Labour Environment Minister Jane Davidson AM
Jane Davidson AM said ''Welsh Labour promised action for a cleaner and greener Wales and now we're acting on that promise. Local people care about the litter and graffiti on their streets and in our community and they want to play their part in improving their environment. I am delighted with this boost from the Assembly Government for these local community projects. Welsh Labour is also planning tough action on recycling, litter, dog fouling, graffiti and fly-tipping by seeking new powers for the Assembly Government over environmental protection."
Ms Davidson continued ''And thanks to record investment in recycling Wales smashed last year's target to recycle more than 25% of our waste and is on course to make sure 40% of waste is recycled by 2010. Cleaning up our environment will go a long way to improve people's quality of life and make our community a safer, cleaner and a greener place to live."
