End of line for electric rail link? 23 July 2010

Jessica Morden today expressed her disappointment that the Tory Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has all but pulled the plug on the £1bn upgrade of the London-Swansea Rail line.  

Jessica Morden said today “I am very disappointed for Newport.  Wales is currently one of the only countries in Europe not to boast a single mile of electrified rail track. It’s very important to the local economy that we have fast modern connections.  And given support for electrification was included in the Tory/Lib Dem Coalition agreement – it’s another broken promise.”

The Labour Government announced a £1 billion upgraded of the Swansea to London rail line in July 2009.
