Foreign Secretary visits Newport 24 July 2009
"Newport welcomes the Foreign Secretary"
Foreign Secretary David Miliband addressed a packed meeting of local residents and Labour Party members at the YMCA in Newport yesterday. Fresh from a UK Government Cabinet meeting in Cardiff, Mr Miliband spoke at length about the Labour's determination to keep delivering for places like Newport, as well as foreign affairs. He also answered questions from the audience.
Leaving the venue as the event ended, Mr Miliband was treated to an impromptu rendition of "Welcome in the Hillside" from City of Newport Male Choir, who by chance were also meeting at the YMCA. This left a superb lasting memory for him as he left for his train.
Newport East MP Jessica Morden said:
"I am delighted that David could make it to Newport, and judging by the fantastic response he received, so were his audience!
"It's important for Ministers to visit parts of the country to see the difference that Labour investment has made, but also listen to people about the challenges they are facing and what they expect us to do to help them through tough economic times."
