Freeze the Bridge Tolls 24 June 2010

Jessica Morden MP raised the issue of the Severn Bridge tolls with the new coalition government. She asked the coalition government for clarification on the coalition’s plans for the Severn Bridge tolls, the progress of the installation of a credit and debit card payment system and whether a local residence discount scheme could be introduced.

Jessica argued that with the tough economic climate it was vital that families, commuters and businesses were given a break from annual toll increases, which substantially affects their budgets. Together with Nia Griffiths, MP for Llanelli, she expressed her concern on the pressures this placed on businesses, and the possible affects this could have on jobs in the South Wales area.

The Minister promised that the debit and credit card system initiated by the previous government would be installed before the Ryder Cup, but would not make any other commitments on the other matters raised. If you wish to read the full debate, please follow the link: http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201011/cmhansrd/cm100623/halltext/100623h0010.htm
