Jessica Morden Puts Pressure On Credit and Debit Card Companies to Prevent Child Abuse 22 July 2010
Jessica Morden, MP for Newport East, has co-sponsored a 10 Minute Rule Bill, tabled by Geraint Davies, MP for Swansea West, which proposes bringing forward legislative powers to impose penalties upon credit card or debit card companies who facilitate users to purchase and therefore download child pornography.
The bill aims to close a loophole abusers have discovered in an attempt to bypass measures to stop them from purchasing and downloading child pornography. They have realised that when buying a pre-paid credit or debit card for £100 a time from, any service station or high street retailer, they do not need any proof of identity. So, in effect, users can register with a false name and address, meaning authorities are not able to track them down.
Jessica said “We must do our utmost to stop these despicable crimes. Abusers are constantly trying to find ways to avoid detection, and politicians, from all parties, must work together to close down any loopholes they find and to try to make sure we protect every child from these people. That is why I fully support my colleague’s bill.”
