Jessica visits local credit union 21 January 2010

Jessica Morden MP for the Newport East Constituency, which includes Caldicot came to meet the Gateway Credit Union team and Councillor Ron Stewart on Friday 15th January to hear how the service is developing.  Gateway Credit Union is long-established in Torfaen, but opened in Caldicot in June 2009. The Credit Union service, run largely by members themselves, offers convenient savings accounts and low cost loans of between £100-£5000.  The Caldicot Credit Union service operates from the Methodist Church hall every Tuesday morning, alongside the town centre market, and the church’s popular coffee morning.  Manager John Richards said “ we’re looking forward to a good year here in Caldicot. We were able to help quite a few new members with loans to spread the cost of Christmas, and now we’re seeing people coming in, and putting their new years resolution into practice by opening savings accounts. Our Christmas Saver account is especially popular, as an alternative to using plastic or saving with a hamper scheme”.   Jessica was particularly interested to hear that Gateway is a provider for Child Trust Fund Accounts, a government scheme to encourage families to save for a child’s future. The Credit Union is currently paying a competitive 3% interest on children’s savings.    A longstanding supporter of the Newport Credit Union, Jessica took the opportunity to open a Christmas Saver account with Gateway.  Anyone interested in joining Gateway Credit Union or volunteering with Gateway should call the Credit Union Office on 01495 750020, see the website www.gatewaycu.co.uk or call in to Caldicot Methodist Church Hall between 10-12. on a Tuesday.
