Newport Transporter Bridge Reopens 30 July 2010
Jessica Morden MP joined hundreds of other people from across Newport at the reopening ceremony of one of Newport’s most famous landmarks, the Transporter Bridge.
At the ceremony, the people of Newport were treated to performances from Newport Male Voice, Côr Casnewydd (the Newport community children's choir) and the YouTube sensations Alex Warren and Terema Wainwright playing Newport (Ymerodraeth State Of Mind), their take on Jay-Z's New York State of Mind.
Jessica said “It is just brilliant to see this iconic landmark in full working order. I have to thank the Welsh Assembly, the Council and Cadw for the money they have ploughed in to restore the bridge. The reopening ceremony was professionally organised and the acts were outstanding. It was, of course, nice to see Alex and Terema perform their YouTube hit; their live performance sounded exactly like their YouTube video. What a great day for Newport.”
The bridge was closed in December 2007 due to worries over the bridge’s safety. However, with restoration money amounting to £1.2 million, most of it, £800,000, coming from the Welsh Assembly Government, and the huge promotional backing from the Friends of Newport Transporter Bridge, the bridge is once again able to transport passengers.
