Study proves legal aid cuts will deny domestic violence victims access to justice, says Jessica 31 January 2012
Jessica Morden, MP for Newport East, asked Justice Secretary Ken Clarke to look at the evidence from Wales which shows that 46% of domestic violence victims surveyed would not be eligible for legal aid if the Government’s proposals for legal aid cuts go ahead.
She highlighted a survey conducted in December by Welsh Women’s Aid and Rights of Women which surveyed 324 Welsh victims of domestic violence. The survey results showed that 46% would not have any of the evidence that the Government now wants from victims – and therefore would not be eligible for legal aid.
Jessica said “This Government says that it is committed to helping victims of domestic violence but they should stop and listen to the evidence which plainly shows many victims in Wales are going to be denied access to justice”.
