Tackling Climate Change Is A Priority 05 February 2008

The Big Ask Got Bigger in Newport

Flanked by one of Newport's biggest bands, Jessica Morden MP and Paul Flynn MP made a further commitment to encouraging the Government to increase the targets set out in the forthcoming Climate Change Bill.

Jessica Morden MP said "This was a great event made even more special by the apperance of GLC. The Newport Friends of the Earth are a very active group and I would like to congratulate them on their work on this important issue."

Jessica went on to say "I realise there is a growing consensus that the 60% targets are not enough and that the Government should increase the minimum target to 80%. I am encouraged that the Prime Minister has publicly stated that he is open to this increase in the target in a recent speech. His willingness to consider this change is backed up by the recently convened Climate Change Committee to look at the implications of increasing the target to 80%."

"I understand that many people are frustrated about time being taken to make the decision on increasing the target but its important to properly collate and study the evidence before making a final decision. Whatever the minimum target, the Government is committed to try to achieve greater reductions in the comming years."
