Newport East
Tax Office Closure to be Challenged by AM & MP 05 March 2008
Newport Tax Office Decision Disappoints Local Politicians
Today's announcement that HMRC are proposing to proceed in relocating the Tax Office out of Newport was described as "extremely disappointing" by Jessica Morden MP for Newport East.
On hearing the news, Jessica Morden said "This is terrible news for the hard working, dedicated staff at the office. I will ask Jane Kennedy MP at the Treasury for an explanation of why the decision was made to proceed with the closure; and I will see what can be done to overturn the decision. The news in even more disappointing when you consider all the hard work done by the staff and supporters to retain a presence in Newport; and the strong representations myself and John Griffiths have made to the House of Commons which included the presentation of a large petition."
Jessica Morden went on to say "The staff, unions and service users have made a clear case for why this is a bad move for the service, the staff and the area. I am disappointed that HMRC management have failed to take the wider view about co-location of offices. Merging with other government offices such as the Valuation Office and with Council Services is a reasonable alternative to ensure the required savings are met."
"Above all this, I feel deeply for the 140 or so staff involved. They are now faced with the logistical problems of commuting to the outskirts of Cardiff. I am concerned about the decision as it appears to fly in the face of Welsh Government policies of outsourcing services from Cardiff."
John Griffiths added: "I am bitterly disappointed that this decision has been made. The relocation is inconsistent with previous HMRC policies which aimed to bring work to Newport from other offices.
"It is a sad loss for the city, but we will do our utmost to reverse this decision. The hardworking staff have worked tirelessly to retain these jobs, making a sensible and compelling case against the relocation. We will appeal to ensure that the needs of staff members are paramount to any decision reached.
"This crucial service provider delivers essential everyday services we often take for granted. Newport is currently witnessing great economic, cultural and social advances. It is important to retain these jobs to ensure Newport continues to be a thriving city of opportunity for all."
