Work Begins on New Hartridge School 08 July 2010

Jessica Morden, MP for Newport East, attended a ceremony last week to celebrate the start of construction work on the new state-of-the-art school to replace the current, dilapidated Hartridge School.

Jessica was joined by the Mayor of Newport, John Griffiths, Assembly Member of Newport East, Cllr Ray Truman, Cllr Ken Powell and Cllr John Guy, all of whom were very pleased that work had started on the new school, after the Tory-Lib Dem coalition wavered on whether to build the school. But after a local campaign with residents, and with the Labour-led Assembly putting more money towards the project, the building of the school got the go-ahead for construction.

Jessica said “I am so happy that they have started to build the school. It is clear for everyone to see that the current school building is not fit for purpose and at one stage we were very concerned that the Tory-Lib Dem coalition wasn’t going to build the new school.

However, I know that John Griffiths, the Labour councillors and I were absolutely committed to this school being built, as the community and the children deserve a 21st century facility that is fit for purpose. We believe in a simple principle: To get the best out of our children, we have to provide them with the best facilities.”
