I'm Against the Closure of Newport's Passport Office
I was at the public meeting that took place at the King’s Hotel and it was clear to everyone that this decision makes absolutely no sense at all.
There are so many reasons why this is such a ludicrous decision that it is hard to know where to start. First and foremost, they are threatening 300 hundred hardworking and loyal staff with redundancy. It will have devastating impact on the staff and their families. These are the same staff that have made the Newport Office the most efficient Passport Office in the country.
The potential knock-on effects for the City of Newport are not worth thinking about. There are many businesses in and around Newport which rely on the trade the office brings in, and to lose that business could prove disastrous to them. How many businesses and jobs will go because of this decision?
It is so important to state that the Newport Office makes money for the Government, that’s right, makes money. Why cut an office that makes you money?
Not only is this a terrible decision for the future of Newport, it’s a terrible decision for Wales. It will mean that Wales is the only nation in Europe without a passport office. What an insult. After the success of Newport hosting the Ryder Cup, it is a real kick in the teeth for the City.

Save the Newport Passport Office!!! Wales needs one just as much as london! We are in a recession, prices are going up! Do you honestly think we as a society have the kind of money to waste on travel to London or Peterbourough when we have a perefectly great one in Newport? Ask yourself that.Regina
Tip top stuff. I'll ecpxet more now.Rosalinda
I feel so much happier now I undresatnd all this. Thanks!Peter Davies
Public Sector jobs such as those in the Passport Service / Office are critical to areas such as Newport who have undergone difficult years and who are now starting to develop their city. Newport has seen little development for many years and the loss of so many jobs and a service relied upon by the whole of South Wales should be reconsidered.Steven Evans-Jones
Save our Passport Office in Wales! Say NO to the Condems!!!GARY ROBERTS
No-one could argue, in the current economic climate, that it is prudent to make economies, but the massive costs of closing down a large well run organisation such as this, in an already deprived area makes no sense whatever. Add to that the equally huge costs of setting it up again elsewhere, and the whole idea becomes a fantasy.david english
i wish to see passport office stay in newport in its present form. one of the main questions i am asked when shopping is where is the passport office by people from the west country and west walesPeter West
Wales SHOULD and MUST have a full passport office. Why arer the other home countries allowed to have (at least one) passport office, yet not Wales? It is hardly green having to drive MILES to visit a passport office when there is a perfectly good one here in Newport already.
Why not close the London office? But then we all know why not, too many important people there, can not upset them. Wales doesn't matter though!!

Like many others, I was so shocked to hear of the decision - or supposed 'consultation'- to close Newport's Passport Office. I am a Newport resident and know people who work there now and others who have worked there in the past. I'm aware of how many visitors the Passport Office brings to Newport's centre, using local cafes and shops and visiting attractions such as the Museum and Art Gallery while they wait for urgent applications to be processed. Newport really cannot afford to lose this passing trade. And from a customer view, how wonderful tha twith the closure of the Newport office, people in south, mid and west Wales and in the west country would be travelling to London or Peterborough with any urgent business - very expensive, not very green and quite shocking customer service. If this is truly a consultation exercise, let it be so. Who else should I contact in central government to express my views?
Best wishes, Megan
