If you’re travelling abroad this summer, watch out for high mobile phone charges. Ofcom -; the independent regulator for the UK communications industry -; have launched a national campaign encouraging British holiday-makers to be wary of charges for internet mobile data when travelling, and in particular to remember to turn off ‘data roaming’ while out of the country.

As members of the European Union, we are fortunate that the cost of using our phones in other EU countries is capped. Similarly there is a limit on data roaming charges in the European Union.

However, it is still very easy to get caught out and run up a sizeable phone bill without meaning to. Ofcom are calling on holidaymakers, including Welsh football fans travelling to Euro 2016 in France, to take simple precautions to avoid hefty charges this summer.

Simple steps – including making use of Wi-Fi hot-spots, turning off mobile data, and considering buying a local pay-as-you-go sim to ring home -; can make a big difference.
