Jessica Morden Jessica Morden - Labour MP for Newport East, Shadow Deputy Leader of the House of Commons and PPS to Keir Starmer
Last week I attended the UK Steel Summit in Rotherham as a member of the All Party Steel Group of MPs. MPs called for the summit to discuss the problems faced by the industry and included representatives from the steel industry, trade unions, MPs and Government Ministers. We have also called another debate next week in Parliament.
I will continue to stand up for steel workers and the communities affected. This week we heard of yet more job losses in the steel industry, this time with all corners of Britain affected. We need action from the Government – We’ve had urgent question after urgent question to the Minister calling for the Government to step in like in other countries and help save our steel industry. They must act now on energy prices, tackling Chinese imports, business rates and procurement, all the issues raised in the summit.
Llanwern and Orb produce some of the best steel products in the world -; we need a Government that supports and celebrates our industry, not just stands aside whilst jobs, investment and innovation go elsewhere.
