Jessica Morden Jessica Morden - Labour MP for Newport East, Shadow Deputy Leader of the House of Commons and PPS to Keir Starmer
I’m supporting the call for tougher sentences for those who cause death by dangerous driving, and have co-signed a public letter to the Justice Secretary from my Labour colleague Liz McInnes MP demanding that the Government bring forward a change in the law.
In 2016 the UK Government launched a consultation on sentencing for dangerous driving which closed in February 2017. Last October, Ministers announced that they would look to change legislation in this area, but since then there has been no movement on the issue.
8 months on from the Government announcing its intention to change the law, we are still awaiting clarification on when new legislation will come forward. In the meantime, families face the possibility of losing loved ones in tragic circumstances while dealing with the injustice of those responsible being handed lenient sentences. We need tougher sentencing.
