It was great to see so many people in Newport supporting the Tour of Britain race as it finished its first stage in the city centre. Well done to all the organisers and congratulations to Andre Greipel on winning the stage.

It was also a pleasure to be at the naming ceremony of the Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales. The renaming is a fitting tribute to the first Welshman to win the iconic Tour de France, and serves as an important reminder of the role this great Newport facility has played in developing world-class cycling talent since it first opened its doors in 2003.
