Ron was a much-loved figure in the Labour Party in Newport, but was also hugely respected across the political divide for his dedication as a longstanding councillor in Beechwood and his tremendous service to the city as Mayor. The fact that he attended an amazing 465 civic engagements during his Mayoral year speaks volumes about his outstanding commitment to the city he loved.
Ron’s passion for politics continued to flourish long after he left the council chamber. He was my agent during my first election in 2005, and has been an ever-present campaigner in every election since then. Even into his nineties Ron was a famed phone canvasser, which reflected just how many people he knew and his ability to get on with everyone.
A great friend to me, he had a wonderful sense of humour and was a joy to be around. Ron was an absolute gentleman and will be much missed by his family, friends and everyone who had the pleasure to know him.
