๐ดA number of residents have asked me about Labour’s policies on animal welfare and I’m really pleased we have produced a dedicated animal welfare manifesto.
During my time as your MP I have raised a number of animal welfare issues with ministers on behalf of constituents: from speaking out against the badger cull and the ivory trade, to the well-being of domestic, farmed and wild animals across the UK. I’ve also engaged regularly with fantastic groups protecting animals inย our area – including the RSPCA, RSPB and Gwent Wildlife Trust.ย ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฆก๐๐ฆ
๐ดI believe we have a moral duty to treat the animals we share our planet with in a humane and compassionate way. No other major political party has such a proven track record of decisive action for animals at home, on farms and in the wild.
๐นLabour’s Animal Welfare manifesto contains a number of key recommendations to drive up welfare standards for farmed, domestic and wild animals. These include:
โ
Strengthening the Hunting Act, introduced by the UK Labour Government, and closing loopholes that allow for the illegal hunting of foxes, deer and hare – including making all illegal hunting and crime a reportable offenceย ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐
โ
Enshrining the principle of animal sentience in UK law๐
โ
Removing two-tier sentencing for animal cruelty so all that animals – whether domestic, under human control or wild – are protected by the same five year maximum sentence for animal crueltyโ๏ธ
โ
A ban on live exports for slaughter and fattening๐
โ
A commitment to the Blue Belt to protect and enhance our marine environment and more.๐๐
