Thank you to Lord Burns and the Commission for their detailed work on the report, and their engagement with local community groups.

The report is right to identify the need for an upgrade of public transport infrastructure in and around Newport, both to reduce congestion on the M4 and improve connectivity across South Wales. I was pleased to see the report recognise the potential for new stations to complement the Metro – including at Magor, Llanwern and Somerton in Newport East.

The challenge now is to deliver what is contained on the page and turn it into a reality for people and passengers in Newport. We now need clarity on timescales to implement the solutions suggested in the report, and this is something I will be pursuing alongside the other elected representatives.

We also need to see the UK Government step up to the plate and address their historic underfunding of rail in Wales to deliver on the upgrade of the south Wales mainline, and for the Welsh Government to support the wider network of alternative bus and active travel enhancements the report sets out.
