Business Question

In Business Questions today I called on the UK Government to do everything it can to safeguard the future of steel jobs in the UK following recent news that Liberty Steel’s main financial backer, Greensill Capital, has gone into administration.

Speaking in Business Questions, I said “Please can we have an opportunity to raise with the Steel Minister the news that one of Liberty Steel’s main financial backers has gone into administration and the company is now working on refinancing? We have an import plant in Newport and a dedicated workforce, and we need to hear what contact the government has had with the company – and that ministers will do whatever they can to protect our steel jobs.”

In response, the Leader of the House of Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg MP said that the government was following developments closely and working with the steel sector on a ‘low-carbon future’. He added that he recognised ‘the importance of the government and the company (Liberty) working as one’.

It’s vital that the government does everything it can to facilitate a comprehensive solution that safeguards the future and protect jobs in our steel industry, which will be so crucial as the country seeks to build back from the pandemic.
