Jessica Morden at the Turkish Kurdish community centre

Having met with members of the Turkish Kurdish community in Newport East in the aftermath of last week’s devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria I have written to the Home Secretary to share their request for family visas to allow them to bring relatives to the UK on a temporary basis while the recovery and rebuild phase of the earthquake continues.

The stories from the community were utterly harrowing, with many constituents having lost lots of family members. It’s important that the government opens up channels of communication for MPs and relatives so we can support the community effectively and share with them the information they need.

I’ll keep pressing the government on behalf of these families and will keep them up to date with any progress and information I receive.
