Today, the government announced that they are looking to release (subject to legal checks) two of the sealed documents from the inquiry into the bombing of the Sir Galahad in 1982 during the Falklands War.
This attack resulted in the deaths of 48 crew and soldiers, with many more injured, and suffering long-term health issues.
The subsequent inquiry concluded mistakes on the part of officers – something the veterans and the families have fought for many years.
Last year, a constituent – Mike Hermanis – who had been aboard the Sir Galahad, came to see me to ask for help campaigning for the release of the sealed documents to clear the names of the officers and servicemen aboard the ship, having explained to me the findings of a book by Crispin Black (a fellow survivor) based on an analysis of the available documents in the National Archive.
While news of the release of two documents is welcomed, time is of the essence, so I asked the minister if he could give me an update on timescales for when they will be available and when the remaining 5 will be published.
