Over the last 14 years, the  Conservatives have busted the Home Office budget and broken the asylum system, leaving genuine asylum applicants, like the many that my office and I support each year, living in limbo while forgetting about those who should be removed from the country.

Recently, a constituent got in touch with my office to ask why, after three years since being released from prison, he hasn’t been deported back to Iraq?

As just one of more than 8,500 foreign criminals who have been living in communities across the country for more than 12 months after their release from prison, he is desperate to leave the country, but the Home Office simply isn’t doing its job, so I took his question to Parliament this week to get answers.

In fact, since the Tories came to power in 2010, removals of Foreign National Offenders are down by 34%.

We can’t continue like this. The asylum and immigration system in the UK needs a huge overhaul to make sure it effectively supports those who need it while ensuring we remove those who shouldn’t be here.
