Tackling e-bikes and e-scooters in Beechwood and across Newport East

We had lots of conversations about e-bikes and e-scooters – especially the way some are being used anti-socially or even for criminal activity. It’s a huge concern, and people rightly want to know what’s being done about it.

Gwent Police have had huge success in tracking down these bikes, and seizing them as part of major operations across Newport, which is making a notable difference.

As well as this, I’ve been pushing for tougher rules on this for a while now.

The good news is the government’s new Crime and Policing Bill, which is currently going through Parliament, includes some really strong measures:

Police will get more powers to seize e-bikes, e-scooters and quads being used anti-socially or for crime – and they won’t have to give a warning first.

They’ll also be able to crush those vehicles within 48 hours, rather than waiting two weeks. So once they’re off the streets, they’re staying off the streets.

Neighbourhood policing is coming back, too – with thousands more officers on the beat, tackling anti-social behaviour where it actually happens.
